The NIV
The New International Version of the Bible is as rich in its history as it is in its intuitive and innovative approach to translation and scholarly study. It has its roots in Protestantism and is considered by Protestants to be the definitive translation for meaningful study. When Evangelical Protestants received their copies of the Revised Standard Edition they found inconsistencies in translations. The most striking of these was Isaiah 7:14. Since the translation did not follow Evangelical traditions a council was convened to develop a strategy and plan for creating a Bible true to the traditions of Evangelical Protestantism.
After a 1965 meeting at Trinity Christian College leaders of the Christian Reformed Church, the National Association of Evangelicals and a group of international scholars re-translated the Bible to a version which was better aligned with their interpretations and teachings. The NIV Bible released its first copy of the New Testament in 1973 with the full Bible following it five years later. Since that time the NIV has become a seminal translation for Biblical scholars and students from all denominations.
